Language Movement Paragraph
The Language Movement was a special movement in East Pakistan, which is now Bangladesh. Pakistan became an independent country in 1947. But the rulers of Pakistan did not give proper respect to Bangla, even though 56% of the people spoke it. In March 1948, Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the leader of Pakistan, announced at Dhaka University that only Urdu would be the state language of Pakistan. This hurt the feelings of the people of East Pakistan, and they strongly opposed it. This event started the Bangla Language Movement. Many students and aware citizens protested against this decision.
On February 21, 1952, the Language Movement leaders decided to march from Dhaka University to the East Pakistan Assembly. To stop them, the government declared Section 144, which banned large gatherings. But the brave students did not follow this rule. The police fired bullets at them, killing students like Barkat, Rafique, Salam, Jabbar, and others. The next day, a strike was held all over East Pakistan. Finally, the Pakistani rulers were forced to accept Bangla as one of the state languages.
This movement made the people of East Pakistan more aware of their rights, and later, it helped in the creation of Bangladesh. Every year, Bangladesh observes February 21 as Martyrs’ Day. The United Nations (UNO) also declared this day as International Mother Language Day, to honor all languages in the world.
